Mobile professionals and weekend adventurers have at least one thing in common: The need to find their way in often unfamiliar terrain. While you can spend a bundle on a luxury car or SUV outfitted with a built-in GPS system to help you along, a more affordable and practical solution is one of the new standalone navigation units designed for in-car use. After all, you can move it from one vehicle to the next, and when the system becomes obsolete, you don't have to ditch the whole vehicle.

We tested four of the latest offerings to see which could get us there from here and back again. All did a good job getting us around Manhattan, northern New Jersey, and Long Island. The standout in the group, though, was the TomTom GO. It provides the most intuitive, easy-to-navigate interface we've seen so far, and its superior 3D point of view more naturally mimics a driver's visual perspective.
